Collaborative research by Inoue, Prof. Hirokazu Tsukaya and Zining Wang of the University of Tokyo, Prof. Atsushi Mochizuki of Kyoto University, Prof. Gorou Horiguchi of Rikkyo University, and colleagues has been published in The Plant Cell.
The study developed a method for inferring recent cell divisions with high accuracy from a single microscopy image by reading the “memory of division” retained in plant cell shapes. Focusing on the junction angles at both ends of newly formed cell walls, the method achieved 94.1% precision and 92.5% recall in Arabidopsis leaf primordia.
The researchers also confirmed high performance in the shoot apical meristem and demonstrated potential applicability to other plants. The analysis software is publicly available, providing a tool for investigating cell division patterns involved in the development of diverse plant forms.
